They employ the majority of hardworking Kiwis, but small and medium-sized businesses have largely been neglected when it comes to online and IT services aimed at making it easier to run their businesses. Wellington web-based accounting software maker Xero this week launched Xero Network, an initiative to encourage software-as-a-service vendors to make their products compatible with each other and therefore easier to use by small business owners. Telecom took the unusual step last month of meeting software-as-a-service providers to discuss partnering with them in an online venture aimed at its small and medium-sized customers. The details of the Wellington meeting aren't being disclosed, but in broad terms, Telecom has a three-pronged strategy for serving the business market that includes new broadband packages and modems, a new suite of services separate to the YahooXtra internet platform and unified communications products that will be offered through a tie-up with Microsoft. The aim is that small businesses can go to Telecom for IT services like web hosting, network security, email and online back-up as well as broadband and phone products. read more

This Internet entrepreneur from Montreal is helping people in many countries earn extra income with an automated business online. Montreal, Quebec — Pierre Philie is a member of the "Freedom Team," a group who provide free help and support for participants of TrafficWave, a business that operates like an automated vending machine. I was able to start a business for less than $18, and the 'Freedom Team' helps me with a free advertising co-op," said Philie. There are many risks associated with starting an online business, such as a high start-up cost, on-going operating costs, advertising and promotion expense, and the cost of time. Because of that arrangement members of the "Freedom Team" are willing to do the work and do the advertising to help new people get started. The Freedom Team is made up of a group of independent marketing representatives who work together as a team to recruit and train new members of their group. read more

Members of more than 100 credit unions throughout the United States can access online services with more confidence than ever, now that the financial institutions are protecting their Internet sites with advanced security solutions from VeriSign, Inc. Michigan State University Federal Credit Union, NIH Federal Credit Union, University of Wisconsin Credit Union and San Mateo Credit Union are leading the charge among institutions committed to foiling the efforts of e-criminals and scam artists by deploying VeriSign Extended Validation (EV) Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Certificates. By deploying VeriSign EV SSL Certificates, these financial institutions can provide consumers using high security browsers with instantly recognizable visible cues that help assure users they have reached a genuine Web page. When a financial institution or other online business uses an EV SSL Certificate to identify itself, browsers including Internet Explorer 7 and the latest beta version of Firefox 3 display easily understood visual cues to provide tangible assurance of a site's authenticity. As the most respected and trusted SSL authority on the Web, VeriSign is the EV SSL Certificate provider of choice for more than 3,000 Internet domains, representing greater than 75 percent of the entire EV SSL Certificate market worldwide. The potential risks and uncertainties include, among others, the uncertainty of future revenue and profitability and potential fluctuations in quarterly operating results due to such factors as the inability of VeriSign to successfully develop and market new products and services and customer acceptance of any new products or services, including VeriSign EV SSL solutions; the possibility that VeriSign's announced new services may not result in additional customers, profits or revenues; and increased competition and pricing pressures. read more
