Millennium Music, a scrappy independent retailer that has ridden the ups and downs of the compact-disc wave for nearly 15 years, is pulling the plug on its brick-and-mortar business to focus on its online venture. The company said Tuesday it is closing its popular store at King and Calhoun streets on May 1, after deciding not to renew its $30,000-a-month lease on the prominent corner space. Millennium Music at King and Calhoun streets in downtown Charleston will close its doors May 1 so its operators can focus on an online venture. The shift comes as independent music stores battle fierce competition from larger online rivals such as iTunes and big-box retailers such as Best Buy and Wal-Mart. The Internet venture, which will remain based in Charleston, buys and sells used CDs and DVDs and allows customers to swap their music and video discs for credit that can be applied toward electronic purchases. read more
